In the pursuit of a fulfilling life, the concepts of love and belonging stand as pillars that resonate across cultures, generations, and ages. From the Bible to modern psychology, the yearning for deep connections and a sense of belonging has shaped the very fabric of human existence.
This post was inspired by a heartfelt conversation I had with a dear friend who shared with me that part of the reason he got married to his ex-wife was his need to belong to a community. Having been brought up in a broken home made him seek the things that he fundamentally needed: love and a sense of belonging. He saw in her not just a partner but a gateway to a larger family, a built-in support system that he had always longed for. It was this aspect of communal belonging that made him overlook the many flaws in the relationship and ultimately tie the knot. Unfortunately, for various reasons that included subtle rejection by the community he hoped to be a part of, the marriage had to sadly come to an end.
The conversation really got me thinking about how our fast-paced world and modern way of life present so many opportunities, but at the same time, they bring unique challenges to forming deep connections and finding a sense of belonging in a community. In today’s world, technology has made it both easier and more complicated to experience love and belonging. While it provides platforms for connection, it also creates barriers to genuine human interaction. Many of us may believe we have a lot of friends, but deep down, we often feel isolated and alone.
I can understand how the desire for love and belonging is such a fundamental part of being human. I’ve recently started opening up to dating and meeting new people, for reasons that are probably similar to most people’s. Something that has really struck me is that nearly everyone I’ve come across seems to be successful and accomplished in a material sense. But despite all that success, without love and connection, it all seems to lack meaning. Material wealth can provide physical comfort, but love and a sense of belonging offer something far more valuable that money can’t buy. Perhaps that’s why it’s so challenging to attain.
Elon Musk has spoken candidly about the importance of love and companionship in his life. He has expressed that being in love and having a long-term partner is essential for his happiness. Musk stated, “If I’m not in love, if I’m not with a long-term companion, I cannot be happy”.This reveals his belief that personal relationships and emotional connections are crucial for his well-being, despite his intense focus on work and innovation. Additionally, he mentioned that sleeping alone is particularly distressing for him, further emphasizing the significant role that love and companionship play in his life. It can be difficult for many people to acknowledge that love and belonging are crucial for their happiness. Oftentimes, we convince ourselves that we can flourish independently and that self-love is the only necessity.
In psychology, Maslow proposed that the need for love and belonging is crucial for human psychological well-being. When these needs go unfulfilled, individuals may experience loneliness, social anxiety, and depression. Conversely, meeting these needs provides emotional security, boosts self-esteem, and contributes to overall well-being.
This theory is often dismissed by a society that prides itself on self-sufficiency and struggles to acknowledge its inability to thrive without love and a sense of belonging.
Fear of being vulnerable, past traumas affecting attachments, cultural influences devaluing personal connections, negative self-perceptions, emotional distancing as a coping mechanism, societal focus on individualism, fear of dependence, and ingrained coping strategies can lead individuals to ignore or deny their need for connection. This shields them from potential pain or rejection but also hinders their ability to form meaningful relationships and find fulfilment in personal bonds.
The journey of giving birth mirrors the profound human need for love and belonging in its rawest form. From the moment of conception to the birthing process itself, we witness a powerful narrative of connection and support. As a mother, I went through the ugliest and most painful process of childbirth for 17 hours. The outcome of the process was my beautiful baby girl whom I cannot imagine my life without. Through the painful experience of childbirth, I am reminded that love is not merely a luxury but an essential ingredient for our emotional well-being and fulfilment, despite it exposing us to its somewhat painful chaotic nature. In embracing this fundamental truth, we acknowledge and come to terms with the fact that although love and belonging may seem like a scary painful process at times, it is really worth it once you successfully attain it.
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves
Romans 12:10
As a Christian woman, I also recognise that Love is the central theme of the Bible, as it teaches that God is love and commands believers to love one another. The Bible emphasises the importance of belonging to a community and having meaningful relationships, as seen through examples like the early Christian church that Paul wrote letters to. Why then would we not risk our sanity and take our chance on love and allow ourselves to belong?
Stay blessed!
